When the going gets tough, the tough get resilient!

Some days are just darker.

Everything you want to achieve still seems too far away, even though you’ve been trying for so long. You feel like you are punching brick walls, fighting unwinnable battles. You are drained of energy, your brain is mush and your heart is joyless.

This last couple of days have been like that for me. So, I retreated into myself  for a bit and ‘nested’.

If like us, you are pursuing and unconventional lifestyle, an alternative way to earn your money, different from mainstream expectations, you know you have additional challenges, like finding financial stability or constantly have to defend your choices when faced with other people’s ignorance and prejudice. So, when your efforts don’t amount to any results or you have to deal with negative people all the time, it does get to you, right?

So, what can you do? Do you quit? Do you give in to sadness?NOOOO!!!!!!!

Don’t fight it

Get angry, get upset, cry, go outside and scream, rebel against the world – let it all out! Just make sure you don’t hold any bitterness or regret in your heart. You want to cleanse yourself from all that hurts you.

Guilt is a useless emotion

Blaming yourself for being weak or having a bad day, will only double your pain. Life is hard enough to deal with. If you allow empty and corrosive feelings to take over, how will you be able to survive?

Pamper yourself

While you are feeling down, nurture and take care of yourself as much as you can. Keep your mind busy with a good book or a thrilling movie. Try some relaxing aromatherapy by lighting some scented candles and have a long warm bath…. Listen to music, call a good friend… Look for comfort and distractions … Don’t binge on food, like I do sometimes.. Carbicide will only make it worse.

Meditation is a great way to reset your mind. Even when you feel like you’re too nervous or anxious to move, the simple act of focusing on your breathing will help you relax.

  • Sit or lay down in a comfortable position
  • Close your eyes
  • Pull down the shades, turn off the lights or any other distractions
  • Inhale through your nose
  • hold the air for 3 seconds
  • Exhale through your mouth until your feel empty of air
  • Hold for another 3 seconds
  • While you are breathing, make sure you are focusing, feeling and visualizing the air going in and out
  • Repeat 10-20 times

You can either stop here and slowly get back to ‘normal’ or stay like that for a while. As you lay there a little longer, keep your eyes closed and allow your thoughts to move freely. Try to observe them, but not keep them there. Observe and let them go

‘Tomorrow is another day’

It definitely is. Most cliches are true and this is one no exception. After a good night sleep, your brain tends to reset and your energy will be back, hopefully. Today was not so good, but we don’t know what surprises tomorrow will bring. The future is all about possibilities and new beginnings. Believe that and jump out of bed like you mean it!

Don’t compare yourself to anyone

We’re all different and unique. We don’t love the same things, what works for some doesn’t work for all, so it really doesn’t make sense that we compare our success and happiness or even our personality to other people’s.  Also, why would you allow other people’s negative opinions to influence your confidence or your decisions? It’s not their call or their life. Got it?

Remember your dream

Visualize your ‘happy ever after’. Always expect setbacks and obstacles, because they are part of life, but understand that they will make you stronger and more resilient. You need to enjoy and embrace the whole journey – from now to where you want to be – each day at a time. If you are always too anxious for the future, you won’t be happy or really savor the present.

I’m done with the dark, time to smile again.
